Environment

The environmental benefits from the operation of the Recycling, Organic Waste Management and Green Energy Production Units are extremely significant. First of all, more than 210.000 tons of animal and organic waste, from all over Cyprus, are absorbed, contributing catalytically to the protection of the environment and the quality of life. This avoids significant effects such as odour, soil pollution, soil and groundwater contamination, visual disturbance, etc. In addition, effective waste management is imperative in accordance with good European practices deriving from Cyprus’ participation in the European Union.

As part of the Group’s activities, more than 18 GW of green energy is produced annually.

For all the operational processes of the unit, a plethora of environmental studies and surveys have been carried out in order, among other things, to protect and improve the environment of the area.

The EMAS (European Union Eco Management and Audit Scheme), specially designed by the European Union for the environmental evaluation and improvement of business complexes, has been adopted and implemented.

All environmental studies that have been submitted have received a positive opinion from the Department of Environment of the Republic of Cyprus. No studies and research report any potential adverse effects.

Additional actions with a strong environmental footprint:

  • The use of processing, anaerobic and aerobic treatment as well as composting (soil improver), have significant benefits to the environment as it results from: the reduction of pollution load, biological load, pollution and odors, following Best Available Techniques and modern practices. It is also possible to reuse significant quantities of water, a resource that we all know is significantly lacking in our country.

  • Creation of a nursery producing 3.000 – 4.000 seedlings annually and planting of more than 10.000 trees in the area of the Group’s facilities

  • Creation of artificial lakes with purified water resulting from aerobic waste treatment, contributing to the development of biodiversity in the area

The final result from the operation of the unit has a positive sign in all environmental protection issues. To date, all studies and researches that have been carried out aim at further improvement and environmental performance of the unit, in accordance with the most internationally stringent standards.

All operational processes of the plant have a particularly positive environmental and socio-economic impact. These are reflected in a series of compliance and certification checks.

According to scientific calculations, methane gas produced by organic waste deposition sites (landfills) is 5 times more harmful to the greenhouse effect than carbon dioxide.
